There are two types of postdoctoral researchers at IUSM, the Postdoctoral Appointee and the Postdoctoral Fellow. Due to funding restrictions, the "type" of postdoctoral researcher you are determines the type of benefit plan you receive. If you are uncertain of the type of postdoc you are, please consult with your P.I. or department administrator.
For Postdoctoral Appointees (those funded through R01s, departmental funds, start up funds, etc.):
Postdoctoral Appointees are considered employees of the university and receive the benefits standard to Academic Appointees. These benefits are detailed on the HRA site at: http://www.indiana.edu/~uhrs/benefits/index.html. For Postdoctoral (Research) Fellows (those on training grants, NRSA, F awards, and other fellowships):
Since many funding agencies require fellows do not have an “employer relationship” with IU, your benefit structure is different than that of Postdoctoral Appointees. If you are beginning your training with this type of funding, you will see no change in your benefit package. As of July 1, 2015, the Postdoctoral Fellow plan will be underwritten by Anthem. However, those initially hired as Postdoctoral Appointees who transition to being a Fellow will experience some changes, detailed below.
Transitioning from a Postdoctoral Appointee to a Postdoctoral (Research) Fellow:
Congratulations! Receiving a fellowship and/or serving on a training grant is quite an accomplishment and honor!
Since you will no longer be an IU employee, you will no longer receive the IU employee benefit package and instead receive the Fellowship Recipient health and dental plans.
As of July 1, 2015, the Postdoctoral Fellow plan will be underwritten by Anthem. Please take a moment to study this information in detail as the transition may bring some changes. Additional funding for benefit costs may be available within your department or with your P.I.
